Photo Feature
Photo feature is a story
told mainly through its images. Text is provided only to support those images.
A
set or a collection of 8-10 photographs describing a short story is called a
photo feature. It must have some text to support the story being described by
the pictures.
A feature story in
Journalism refers to any human interest stories / soft news. Features discuss
various topics, from travelogue, how-to recipes, services, gadgets, wildlife
expeditions, etc. It need not necessarily focus on any current/latest issues
and portrays the writer’s point of view/ viewpoint.
Photo feature
consists of a series or collection of photo which are interwoven to convey a
story only with captions or without any need for captions to convey through
words.
Photo features
appears in newspapers, magazines and web contents. These photos don't need any
words to explain since they speak for themselves,
Photo features got
its shape during the World War-2 when photojournalists carried their cameras
and other gears and gadgets to the war scenes to capture the plights of the
commoners, destruction, lost of lives, struggle of soldiers, etc.
Photo Journalism/Photographic Coverage
Even in our internet age, photographs can be very powerful.
They are in many cases the way we remember a historic event years later.
Photo journalists are thus an essential
part of a news story: the story may be in words, but the photo is a lasting
remembrance of the people or places in that story.
A photo journalist goes out with a
reporter to cover a story, and shoots pictures to accompany the story. Some
photos are simply what happened at the scene--people standing around after a
car crash or a house fire; people hugging at a wedding; a large crowd gathering
to hear a famous speaker.
But there are also iconic photographs
that show children running from being napalmed in Vietnam, or a woman with an
exhausted and sad expression as she contemplates her hungry family during the Great
Depression or shocked runners looking at the street after the Boston Marathon
bombing.
There are photos of the daily lives of
presidents (like President Kennedy) or celebrities (like Princess Diana) or
photographs that show an event and evoke an emotion in the viewer (like the
devastation of a tsunami or tornado); we still look at these photos years later
and are amazed at their power, because they take us back to that event and to
that specific moment in time.
So photo journalism is another way to
preserve history, and as such, it is extremely valuable, since what is in the
frame and in the shot is what we will remember.
Photos increase the importance of the news.Its increases the
credibility of the news, because seeing the photo, the reader believes that the
journalist was present at the time of the incident.
Photos change the appearance of the newspaper. They make the
page more attractive and force the reader to read the news.

फोटो फीचर क्या होता है?
फोटो फीचर, फीचर का ही एक अंग है। मोटे तौर पर समाचार पत्रों में खबर के इतर जो कुछ छपता है, वह फीचर की परिधि में आता है या यह भी कहा जा सकता है कि समाचार पत्रों में जो बड़े आलेख छपते हैं, वे फीचर कहलाते हैं।
फीचर का ही एक रूप फोटो फीचर भी है, जिसमें फीचर अपने असली रूप में प्रकट होता है। यहाँ शब्द कम होते हैं, उनकी जगह सुन्दर छायाचित्र होते हैं। लेकिन चित्रों को शब्दों के माध्यम से अभिव्यक्त भी करना होता है।
फोटो फीचर एक प्रकार से किसी घटना या समाचार की फोटोग्राफिक कवरेज होती है।
जहां हम फीचर से यह अपेक्षा करते हैं कि उसमें शब्दों के जरिये किसी व्यक्ति, स्थान या परिस्थिति का चित्रण किया गया हो, वहीं फोटो फीचर में चित्र पहले से ही उपलब्ध होते हैं, जो रिक्त स्थान रह जाते हैं, उन्हें ही शब्दों के जरिये भरना होता है। इसलिए यहाँ अत्यंत सुन्दर और प्रासंगिक शब्दों की जरूरत होती है।
यहाँ हमारे पास शब्दों के लिए जगह बहुत ही कम होती है। कई बार कैप्शन या चित्र परिचय की तरह से विवरण प्रस्तुत करना होता है। इसलिए यहाँ भाषा-शैली की विशेष महत्ता है। सुंदर चित्रों के बीच असुंदर शब्द नहीं चल सकते।
फोटो फीचर जैसी चीज दूसरे विश्व युद्ध के दौरान लोगों के सामने आई, जब फोटो जर्नलिस्ट ने अपने कैमरे और गैजेट के जरिये युद्ध के दृश्यों को लोगों के सामने प्रस्तुत किया। उस दौरान फोटो पत्रकारों ने आम लोगों की दुर्दशा, विनाश, लोगों की जिंदगी खत्म के खात्मे, सैनिकों के संघर्ष आदि को बेहद जीवंतता के साथ कैमरे में कैद किया और फिर उसे अखबारों के जरिये सारी दुनिया को दिखाया।

इस इंटरनेट युग में भी, तस्वीरें बहुत
शक्तिशाली हो सकती हैं। तस्वीरों के जरिये हम कई साल बाद भी किसी ऐतिहासिक घटना को
याद कर सकते हैं।
फोटो पत्रकार किसी समाचार का एक अनिवार्य
हिस्सा है। समाचार की कहानी शब्दों में हो सकती है, लेकिन तस्वीर उस कहानी में लोगों या स्थानों की स्थायी याद होती है।
फोटो किसी समाचार के महत्व को बढ़ा देते हैं। इससे
समाचार की विश्वसनीयता बढ़ती है क्योंकि फोटो देखकर पाठक यह मानता है कि पत्रकार
घटना के समय मौके पर ही मौजूद था।
फोटो, समाचार पत्र का रूपरंग बदल देते हैं। वे पेज को
ज्यादा आकर्षक बना देते हैं और पाठक को समाचार को पढ़ने के लिए मजबूर करते हैं।
एक फोटो पत्रकार किसी समाचार को कवर करने के
लिए संवाददाता के साथ बाहर जाता है, और समाचार जुटाने के दौरान चित्रों को खींचता है। कुछ तस्वीरें घटना को
बताने वाली सामान्य और जरूरी तस्वीरें होती हैं। जैसे कि कार दुर्घटना या घर की आग
के बाद चारों ओर खड़े लोग;
शादी में गले मिलते लोग; किसी प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति को सुनने के लिए जमा
भीड़। लेकिन कुछ ऐसी प्रतिष्ठित तस्वीरें भी होती हैं जो लोगों को झकझोर देती हैं।
जैसे वियतनाम में जहरीली गैस वाले बमों से बचने के लिए भागते बच्चों की तस्वीर या
महामंदी के दौरान अपने भूखे परिवार के लिए चिंतित दुखी व थकी महिला की तस्वीर या
फिर बोस्टन मैराथन में बमबारी के बाद सड़क की ओर देखते हैरान धावकों की तस्वीर।
राष्ट्रपति के दैनिक जीवन (जैसे राष्ट्रपति
केनेडी) की तस्वीरें या हस्तियों (जैसे राजकुमारी डायना) से जुड़ी तस्वीरें या
तस्वीरें जो किसी घटना को दिखाती हैं और दर्शकों में अनोखी भावना पैदा करती हैं,
जैसे सुनामी या तूफान के विनाश की तस्वीरें। हम ऐसी तस्वीरों को वर्षों बाद भी देखते हैं
और उनकी शक्ति व क्षमता पर चकित होते हैं, क्योंकि वे हमें उस घटना और उस विशिष्ट क्षण के समय पर वापस ले जाती हैं।
इस प्रकार फोटो पत्रकारिता इतिहास को
संरक्षित करने का एक और तरीका है, और इस तरह, यह बेहद मूल्यवान और महत्वपूर्ण है।
